Medicare Advantage Information

Medicare Advantage Plans are also known as Medicare Part C. Medicare Advantage (MA) Plans may offer additional coverage beyond Medicare Part A (hospital) & Medicare Part B (medical) such as vision, hearing, dental, health and wellness programs, and/or prescription drug coverage.

Medicare Advantage Plans are issued by insurance companies. Rules of service including out-of-pocket costs vary between companies and plans. Changes can occur each year, including which doctors and hospitals will accept particular MA Plans for payment. Be sure to consult with Medicare, your physicians, local hospitals, and an experienced agent to find out if a Medicare Advantage Plan is right for you.

“When can I enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan?”

When you first become eligible for Medicare, your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is the 7-month period that begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65.

If you are under age 65, and on Medicare due to a disability, your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is the 7-month period that begins 3 months before your 25th month of disability and ends 3 months after your 25th month of disability.

Each Year between October 15 – December 7
This Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is the Open Enrollment Period (OEP) when Medicare beneficiaries can either 1) join, 2) switch, or 3) drop a Medicare Advantage Plan. New Coverage will begin on January 1st of the new year.

“Are there any special exceptions?”

Each Year between January 1 – February 14
You can leave your Medicare Advantage plan and switch to Original Medicare. You can also join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) to add Part D drug coverage. Making the switch to Original Medicare, may also help you to become eligible for a Medicare Supplement / Medigap Policy.

Special Enrollment Periods
In most cases, you must stay enrolled for the calendar year starting the date your coverage begins. However, in certain situations, you may be able to join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage Plan if:

  • You move out of your plan’s service area
  • You have Medicaid
  • You qualify for Extra Help
  • You live in an institution (like a nursing home)

NEW: 5-Star Special Enrollment Period
Now you can switch to a 5-star Medicare Advantage Plan at any time during the year.

  • The overall plan star ratings are available at www.medicare.gov/find-a-plan.
  • You can only join a 5-star Medicare Advantage Plan if one is available in your area.
  • You can only use this special enrollment period to switch to a 5-star plan one time each year.
  • You can not use this period to join a Medicare Cost Plan.
