Medicare Part D Information

Medicare Part D is Prescription Drug Coverage for generic, name brand, and specialty drugs. Part D is acquired through individual insurance companies as stand-alone Prescription Drug Plans (PDP) or in conjunction with a Medicare Advantage Plan (MA-PD). Formularies, deductibles, co-pays, and monthly premiums all vary between companies and plans. Be sure to consult with a trusted agent or visit Medicare.gov.

“When can I enroll in a Medicare Part D Plan?”

When you first become eligible for Medicare, your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is the 7-month period that begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65.

If you are under age 65, and on Medicare due to a disability, your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is the 7-month period that begins 3 months before your 25th month of disability and ends 3 months after your 25th month of disability.

Each Year between October 15 – December 7
This Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is the Open Enrollment Period (OEP) when Medicare beneficiaries can apply for a new Medicare Part D plan with a start date of January 1st for the coming new year. Good health or poor health makes no difference. Prescriptions change, formularies change, monthly premiums and co-pays change; therefore, the Annual Open Enrollment Period provides an opportunity to potentially save money each year.

PLEASE NOTE: Only one (1) Part D plan can be active at any given time, that is why successful enrollment into a new Medicare Part D plan should automatically dis-enroll a person from his/her current plan.

“When happens if I do not enroll in a Medicare Part D Plan?”

Enrollment is 100% voluntary; however, a person will be penalized with an increase in monthly fees if he/she enrolls at a later date.

Late Enrollment Penalty This is calculated by multiplying 1% of the "national base beneficiary premium" ($34.10 in 2017) times the number of full, uncovered months a person was eligible but did not join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan and went without other creditable prescription drug coverage. The final amount is rounded to the nearest $.10 and added to your monthly premium.

Creditable Coverage If a Medicare-eligible individual has Rx coverage comparable to Medicare Part D through his/her employer or another source, then it is possible to delay Part D enrollment without penalty.
